The Christmas Blogger Interview - Battlemum

Next on my Christmas blogger interview is my friend Cath from

1 - Do you have any family Christmas traditions?
One big tradition that stood for many years in my family was when our tree went up. There are lots of birthdays in December in our house so my parents would put the tree up on the 16th December, the first of those many birthdays. It also had to come down by the 6th January to avoid bad luck. I think this stems from the Feast of the Epiphany, on old Catholic Feast Day that isn’t well celebrated anymore.

2 - What’s your ultimate Christmas movie?

My absolute favourite Christmas movie is the Muppets Christmas Carols. It’s not always shown at Christmas on TV so I bought it on DVD a few years ago to ensure I’m never disappointed. I include it in BattleKid’s Christmas Eve Box and will do so until he requests a different one. My favourite song is the Scrooge song!

3- What 3 songs would be top of your festive playlist?

I’ve actually been thinking of putting together my top 5 or 7 Christmas songs list for my blog so this question is very apt. Top of the list is Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea. It has to be his version and not Michael Ball’s. Christmas doesn’t really start for me until I hear that song on the radio of my car during December. It’s a thing in our family started by my Mum a few years ago and every one of us girls (there are 3/4 of us who drive) agree it’s not Christmas until we hear it. If I don’t hear it by Christmas week then I play it via Spotify.

Next it has to be Fairytale of New York by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacCall. This one of those classic ultimate pop Christmas songs and it actually makes me feel a bit emotional. Last but not least no list of Christmas songs would be complete without Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is You! Such a feel-good festive song.

4 - Are you an online shopper or do you go to the actual stores?
I’m definitely an online shopper. While it’s nice to wander around the shops at Christmas to get into the Christmas spirit, the crowds start doing my head in so it’s safer for me and my sanity to do it mostly online.

5 - Do you make shopping lists or buy things when you see something nice?
I don’t tend to make lists at all. I’m very much an impulse buyer. I know in my mind who I have to buy for and I browse until I see something right. My hubby and I have some reliable staples on our lists that we always buy for one another and are never disappointed with.

6 - Do you send Christmas cards?

Yes, living away from all our family means I do send Christmas cards. I am terrible at missing the cut off date so I am trying to be a bit more organised this year. They’re all bought, I just need to get BattleKid to sign his and they’re ready to go to the Post Office.

7 - Do you have an elf on the shelf? What do you do with it?
Not yet. BattleKid is just turning 3 in January so it still a bit unsure of what is happening but I think next Christmas is going to be the year for Elf on the Shelf to start. In the meantime I’m gathering ideas from the posts I’m seeing on Facebook and Instagram!

8 - Do you have chocolate advent calendars or something else?
No, last year I got BattleKid a Vtech Toot Toot Advent calendar and this year he has a PlayMobil one. I have two beauty ones, a NYX makeup one as it’s my new favourite brand of makeup and also the Sanctuary Spa one.

9 - Do you do a Christmas eve box? If so what’s in it?
Yes, I got one for BattleKid for his first year and use it each year although again I think it will come into its own from next year. However, that said I put in new Christmas pyjamas, our From Me to You Christmas Past and Present book, the Muppets Christmas Carol DVD and some new tree decorations. I always get BattleKid a new peronsalised decoration each year for him to put on the tree on Christmas Eve. They are then a reminder of past Christmases when we decorate the tree the following year.

10 - Do you make any gifts?

No we don’t, although I might start making our own Christmas cards after being inspired by a friend.

11 - Do you do any Christmas crafts?

I have to be honest and say I’m not the most crafty of mums but really want to try change that from next year.

12 - If you could only eat 3 things from your Christmas dinner, what would they be?

Roast potatoes, my Dad’s homemade stuffing and honey-glazed ham. I couldn’t have a Christmas dinner without them!

13 - What’s your favourite festive tipple?

Before we gave up drinking it had to be a really expensive bottle of champagne which we’d open when we sat down to dinner. Now it’s the non-alcoholic mulled spice drink you can get. It’s nice warmed up while I’m cooking dinner for us.

14 - Where are you spending Christmas this year?

This year we have decided to head south and get some winter sun so we’ll be spending Christmas in Tenerife. We will be back for New Year’s so we plan to have Christmas Eve on New Year’s Eve as BattleKid won’t know the difference this year. I think it’s the last year we have before he cottons on to what happens in December! But Father Christmas is still bringing a few small gifts to him while we are in the Canaries.

15 - If you could go to any Christmas market in the world where would you go?

This is a hard one as my sisters-in-law go to a different one each year and they always come back singing the praises of them. But I think I’d like to visit the Christmas markets of Vienna first and foremost. I’ve never been to Austria so think this would be a wonderful place to visit for the Christmas markets.

Thank you for taking part Cath. I also love honey glazed ham!!
